To Lighten/Brighten Darker Bases using PSP8
These were made using PSP8, which has an 'Enhance Photo' feature. I'm not sure if other PSP editions have this feature or something similar. Also, one of the last steps includes the use of a Xero plugin called “Improver” which is included in Set 2,
available here. You can skip this step, but I have found the feature to be well worth the download.
Tut#1: Dark Orangey Base...

I started with
this cap and reduced the image size to Width 197 x Height 110. Then I opened a new 100 x 100 transparent box and copied the reduced image and pasted it onto the transparent box as a new layer. Taking the move tool, I moved the pic around to where I wanted it, and went to Layer-Merge-Merge All Flatten. This gave me the dark image posted above.
Duplicate the new base and set it to Screen 100%, and duplicate the Screened layer two more times. With Copy 3 highlighted, go to Adjust - Hue and Saturation - Hue/Saturation/Lightness. Set Saturation at -100, leaving the layer set at Screen 100%. Next, duplicate the base and move it to the top, set at Soft Light 30. It looks like this…

Now add a new layer and flood fill with #01597D, set to Exclusion 50%.

Then add another new layer and flood fill with #C0C0FF, set to Burn 50%.
My pic and pallet at this point look
like this. Then merge all flatten.
Next, I used several selections under the
Enhance Photo option on the tool bar: I chose Automatic Contrast Enhancement and set to Darker, Normal, Bold. Then I chose Automatic Saturation Enhancement and set to Less Colorful and Weak, Skintones off. Then I chose Edge Preserving Smooth set to 2, and still under Enhance Photo I chose Sharpen.
If you don’t have the Xero plugin – you can skip this next step… or go to Effects, and under the Xero plugin choose Improver, and set at 5/20/5 respectively.
Duplicate your adjusted background and set it to Multiply 20%. Merge Flatten, and… Final Result

Tut #2: Dark Bluish Base…

To get my base, I took
this cap, and reduced the image size to Width 197 x Height 110. Then I opened a new 100 x 100 transparent box and copy the reduced image and paste it on the transparent box as a new layer. Taking the move tool, I moved the pic around to where I wanted it, and went to Layer-Merge-Merge All Flatten. This gave me the dark image posted above.
Duplicate the base and set to Screen 100%, then duplicate that screened layer three more times, and with Copy 4 highlighted, go to Adjust - Hue and Saturation - Hue/Saturation/Lightness. Set Saturation at -100, leaving the layer set at Screen 100%. Next, copy the original base and move it to the top and set to Soft Light 30%.

Now, add a new layer and flood fill with an orangey color; I used #EE9226
and set the layer to Soft Light 100%. Merge Flatten.
Use the
Enhance Photo option on the tool bar. First choose Auto Color Balance, Strength 30, check remove color cast, Temperature at 6500; next choose Auto Contrast, Neutral, Normal, Bold; then choose Auto Saturation, Less colorful and Normal, Skintones off; then Edge Preserving Smooth, set at 2; and last, choose Sharpen.
If you don’t have the Xero plugin – you can skip this next step… or go to Effects, and under the Xero plugin choose Improver, and set at 9/30/9 respectively.
Duplicate your adjusted base and set it to Multiply 10%. Merge Flatten. Final result…
